Michigan Scenery – 12 Months in the UP

The best scenery from every month in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

This 12-part series is my tribute to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It includes footage from 656 separate days of shooting in the UP spread out over the past 6 years! I lived in the UP from 2011-2019 and I love this place, but I decided to move. It was not an easy decision to leave the UP but I think it's time to see a new place. In November 2019 I moved to Montana to start a whole new adventure.

January - in the Upper Peninsula

Winter has set in. The lakes are frozen and ice is forming on Lake Superior. Sometimes a cold snap of -30 windchill will form a thick and clear sheet of ice on the great lake.

February - in the Upper Peninsula

Winter deepens its hold on the U.P. the snow is getting deep and the woods are very still.

March

An unpredictable time of the year. Winter could tighten its grip on the woods or it could fade away early. It will probably do both a couple times.

April

Michigan scenery in April. Spring is just around the corner. The animals are becoming more active. Then just when you think winter is over a big snowstorm hits.

May

Spring has arrived and it's not going anywhere this time. The foliage is coming back to life and warmth returns to the land.

June

The buzz of summer is in the air. Everything becomes active and the bugs begin to take over.

July

Lake Superior is still cold but the days are long and warm.

August

Summer is in full swing and so are the bugs. A fair tradeoff in the U.P.

September

Summer is fading away, but there are still a few unseasonably warm days. The trees are beginning to think about hibernation.

October

The explosion of fall color sweeps across the U.P. It starts inland first, then expands to the shores of Lake Superior.

November

Another unpredictable time of the year. Fall may hold out, offering mild temperatures and a bare forest. Or winter will come early and blanket the land in two feet of snow with a single storm.

December

The woods have gone dormant in preparation for the long freeze ahead.
